A major water main on East Street in Methuen, near Swan Street, burst around 3 a.m. on Friday, May 12, according to the City of Methuen Water Department.

A large hole, around 30 by 30 feet in size, opened up around the water main. Multiple driveways and around 70 feet of the edge of the road were lost in the incident, the Water Department told Daily Voice.

East Road is closed from Russ Street to Swan Street at the East Fire Station, but the city hopes to have the roads open between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to the Water Department.

Gravel will be added to the road to make it safe, but work will continue through next week to repair the damage.

Houses without water should have service restored by approximately 12:30 p.m.

The break was likely due to the pipe's old age, a representative from the Water Department said.
